Released September 19, 2017: Adult Education Attainment and Assessment Scores: A Cross-National Comparison

 

Question:  How do the skills between adults without a high school degree and those who had at least an associate's degree compare across countries?

Answer: The score gaps were wider in the United States than in any other OECD country that participated in PIAAC, except one. To learn more read this Stats in Brief.

 

Foundational Skills in the Service Sector is based on an analysis of PIAAC data, focusing on currently employed workers in retail, hospitality, and health care. The report includes examples of how employers are helping their workers build literacy, numeracy, and technology-related skills. It also includes recommendations for state and federal policymakers about how to support adult education and workplace learning opportunities for these workers. Released March 10, 2016: U.S. PIAAC 2012/2014 First Look Report

The President’s Upskill initiative aims to act on PIAAC data which revealed that two-thirds of low-skilled adults in the U.S. were employed. The initiative is focused on empowering Americans with the education and training they need to develop new skills and earn higher wages. The White House report focuses on central questions that are driving the work of the initiative to help more Americans “upskill”.

 

 

 

Released February 2015: Making Skills Everyone's Business: A Call to Transform Adult Learning in the United States

This report presents a vision for making adult skill development—upskilling—more prevalent, efficient, effective, and convenient. This vision rests on an understanding that foundation skills—the combination of literacy, numeracy, and English language as well as employability skills required for participation in modern workplaces and contemporary life—are a shared responsibility of, and value and benefit to the entire community.

 

Released January 2015: America's Skills Challenge: Millenials and the Future

This report by ETS sheds light on the growing inequality of opportunity in the United States and the impact this has on both skills acquisition and outcomes for both current and future generations.

 

 

 

 

Released December 2013: Time for the U.S. to Reskill: Consultation Paper

Prepared by the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Vocational and Adult Education, Time for the U.S. to Reskill: Developing a National Action Plan to Improve the Foundation Skills of U.S. Adults that explains the OECD Report, provides background information, definitions, and key findings from the report, as well as implications and policy recommendations. The paper also describes the Framework for a National Action Plan and provides links to other resources.

The Center for Law and Social Policy (CLASP) released a second brief in their series “Reconnecting Justice in the States”, which explores coordinated justice, education, and workforce policy and practice at the state level. The brief, Incarceration to Reentry Education & Training Pathways in Indiana uses PIAAC Prison Study data and describes Indiana’s efforts to provide education and training opportunities for incarcerated individuals.

Released November 15, 2016: U.S. PIAAC Survey of Incarcerated Adults Results
